Trip - Part 1

We left on July 30, the day of our 5th anniversary, bright and early in the morning. It was a very sad goodbye to our little guy, but we were excited to start our adventure! After some flight issues (gotta love Delta), we were able to get to Kalispell, MT hours before our originally scheduled arrival (we actually lucked out with our flight issues this time!). Our bags, however, weren't going to make it until later. We got our little Suburu (the "sube" as we called it the rest of the trip). We were making fun of having the Sube, but that is the car of choice up there. Everyone has one! They are all wheel drive, so I think that's why, and actually, it was really nice! We had several people ask us how we liked our Suburu! So funny! Our plan was to stay in Whitefish, MT for the first night, and then go into Glacier National Park the next day. Whitefish is a cute little ski town. They have a huge ski resort there and we had been told to get on one of the ski lifts and take it to the top and eat lunch up there, so that's what we did when we got there.

I was NOT a fan of the ski lift! It was really scary! This was the view from the top looking out towards Glacier.

I look silly in my jacket, but it was cold up there (to me).

I had wanted to ride in one of the closed-in lifts that you see below, but no, Joel wanted to ride the one where your feet dangle. He kept shaking the lift because he thought it was funny that I was so scared.

I cannot even imagine how beautiful it is up here when the snow is on the ground.

We were heading straight down at this point!

After lunch, we headed back down to Whitefish to walk around. I wish I had taken a picture of the little town because it was so cute! It was filled with little shops and restaurants and bars, and even a brewery, which of course we had to try out the local Montana brews! The big thing out there is huckleberries. All the stores and restaurants have huckleberry everything--ice cream, pies, pancakes, huckleberry beer, and huckleberry wine. We had our share of all things huckleberry while we were up there! They were good, just another version of a blueberry, but they are very proud of their huckleberries up there! :) We had a good time walking around town and then we had to head back to the airport to get our bags. Thank goodness they had arrived!

We had a wonderful dinner at the Grouse Mountain Lodge (where we also stayed) and celebrated 5 wonderful years of marriage!

The next morning, we woke up to stormy skies and were so sad because that was the day we were scheduled to go ziplining at the Whitefish ski resort. That was one of the things that I was most excited about and we were worried we wouldn't get to do it because of the lightning. We went to go check it out anyway, almost certain it would be canceled. They got us all suited up and told us to wait it out a little while and maybe the skies would clear.

Here we are in all our gear waiting to go!

Finally, the skies cleared and they let us go! It was SO much fun!!! These ziplines were not for the wimpy (me!) and each one terrified me while we waited until it was our time to go. We had special positions that we had to do during the process to slow us down at times, and there was even a special landing position you had to get in because you were going so fast. They reached speeds of up to 50-60 mph as we flew through the sky from mountain to mountain. We did four of them, and they actually had 2 more that we didn't do that were even higher. One of them was so high that they had to put balls on the wire so that planes wouldn't run into the wire! I was glad we didn't do that one! It was really some of the most fun that I've had in a while. They had it set up so that two people went at a time, and Joel and I would race each other to the finish.

They had a professional photographer at certain locations throughout the course, so these pictures below were taken by him. We were glad to not have to deal with a camera.

Look, no hands! And yes, this lasted for 1 second before I grabbed the bar to hold on for dear life! The ski lift that we were on the day before had a bar that went in our laps so while I was terrified, I at least had a bar to hold onto and feel somewhat secure. This one didn't have the lap bar!

If you look at a close up of the picture below, you can see how scared I am! It was fun, but we were going so fast!
On the really fast ones, they made Joel wear a parachute to slow him down.

After the zipline, we had a late lunch and then headed into the park. Stay tuned!
